Glossary

Use this little propaedeutics as an introduction to the world of SMS solutions and innovations. Here you will find technical terms from A to Z.

A2P

… stands for application to person. This refers to applications that appeal to end users. Among ohter, these include apps that are installed and used on the smartphone. Here, for example, the application generates an instant message that is immediately displayed directly on the receiver’s device. Even servers and systems can automatically send pre-programmed messages to the responsible employee, for example, if a virus has been found, unauthorized access is taking place or stocks are running low. The application sends fully automated SMS or emails without the involment of other people.

API

The abbreviation stands for application programming interface. Via this interface, various applications (software) but also memory (hardware) and user interfaces can be linked together. For example, content management systems can be linked to web shops or calendars / organizers to communication platforms such as our SMS Gateway. Various APIs can therefore be used to reach (or address) completely different modules. For this purpose, the data transmission is standardized in the API accordingly. The interface translates the language of an application and makes it readable for others.

API Key

For security, personal accounts linked through API have a separate key. This key is similar to a generic password and is only accessible to the user. Here, above all, data protection is in the foreground. By entering the specific code, the user verifies himself as account holder and can release his applications for the interface.

B2B

In the field of business to business, SMS gateways are in great demand. Above all as a platform for employee communication and as an additional option to reach business partners around the world at any time and always reliably.

B2C

Applications in the field of business to consumer are also increasingly relying on SMS gateways. SMS campaigns can excellently support the marketing strategies of the companies. In particular, notifications of order status, appointments, newsletters, invitation, and interactive two-way messaging (surveys) are efficient touchpoints on the customer journey.

Flash SMS

This is a form of instant messages (IM). The message appears immediately on the receiver’s display but is not stored on the receiving device. The sender can track the deliver report of the message as usual in the journal.

Flash SMS messages are used, for example, for indications about soon empty credit or for reminder functions (example: meeting starts in 10 minutes).

HLR Lookup

HLR stands for Home Location Register. Meant is the respective database of a mobile network operator, in which all mobile numbers belonging to the network are stored. Each mobile service network operator has its own register, so there is no central index. If a new number is assigned, it is also automatically registered in the corresponding HLR.

An HLR lookup sends an overarching request to these registers to collect information about a mobile number. Among other things, the sender receives feedback in response, whether the specified number is currently valid, to which network it belongs, in which country it’s currently located and if the roaming status is active. Using this number validation, contact data can be optimally maintained and segmented.

HTTP

The so-called Hypertext Transfer Protocol transmits data from the field of application via digital networks. Primarily, it is used for loading and displaying web pages in the browser. In addition, web pages and corresponding applications can be linked to the SMS Gateway via an HTTP API (interface). Thus, for example, SMS can be conveniently send via webapp.

Inbound SMS

Our dedicated Inbound SMS system offers the possibility to integrate a return channel. For this, a separate phone number is created, which is displayed as the sender of the SMS. Answers or responses to these SMS messages are automatically assigned to the corresponding phone number and thus to the associated customer account. The seven customer can then see the answer in his journal or let it send to hier registered email address. An answer is also possible.

This is also referred to as so-called two-way messaging, similar to the conventional version to exchange messages from mobile devices between two mobile numbers. Just with all the additional features of the SMS Gateway.

Journal

Each seven customer has a journal feature in his account area. On the basis of the information documented there, the customer can track outgoing as well as incoming SMS. The recipient numbers including country code, the content of the messages, the time of transmission and the status are displayed. In addition, further details will be provided. These include, among other things, the message ID (important for complaints), the coding, the number of characters and via which access the massage was sent.

This information is essential for static evaluations and further customer segmentation or budget planning for marketing activities. Statistics can also be created by customers in the account.

MNP Lookup

The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) request is a simplified form of the HLR lookup, but also provides less information. Only the current network provider and the porting status are output. In countries where a comprehensive HLR request is not allowed, a MNP lookup will help at least a little further to maintain and segment the contact details by number validation.

Number validation

Number validation uses HLR or MNP lookups. The goal is to get detailed information about a specific mobile phone number. On the basis of this information, contact lists can be kept up-to-date and segmented according to an application. For example, the roaming status may be an exclusion criterion of a contact for a regional SMS campaign. Costs and efficiency of the messages can be optimized thereby.

Physical phone number

Physical numbers are used by our Inbound SMS system. Responses or feedback that the recipient addresses to the physical sender number can be assigned to the corresponding customer account via the dedicated system.

The physical phone number is a numeric ID including a country code. For example, with seven you can get a German phone number. This is reliably detected by all telecommunication networks.

Routing

That’s how the telecommunication industry calls its paths of data transmission. Meant are the routes that a message take through the radio and / or digital networks. Encrypted messages are divided into several packets, each of which is routed via another route and reassembled and displayed completely at the destination, ie the recipient. The networks are linked worldwide. Nevertheless, there are often conflicts in routing, especially in other EU countries. Country-specific restrictions and unreliable providers complicate a gapless and complete data transfer.

That’s why we use adaptive routing, for example. In this case, individual nodes of the networks periodically exchange routing information with each other and thus create a list of preferred transmission paths. If one node fails, the next one on the list can be addressed directly. The delivery of the message can thus be guaranteed much better.

SMS Gateway

An SMS gateway is basically a communication platform (CPaaS) for the transmission of messages between the most diverse sending and receiving modules. As a central interface, the gateway distributes account-bound text and voice messages according to the desired input / output formats. For example, SMS can be converted into emails and vice versa. The gateway is addressed via APIs, be it from applications or web-integrated systems. The sending and receiving of the messages is also done via API.

In contrast to the traditional method to send SMS from one mobile device to another, an SMS Gateway offers numerous additional functions: bulk SMS, time-delayed sending, requests (lookups), statistical evaluations, and – especially if needed – simpler structures to manage contacts and classify messages.

The decisive advantage: preconfigured parameters enable the fully automatic sending of SMS. For example, automatically generated PINs and other verifications, monitoring reports, alerts and much more.

SMPP

SMPP stands for Short Message Peer to Peer. In other words, a powerful API based on a unified protocol for transmitting data between network elements and centers. Mainly this interface is used to send SMS, especially for large data volumes and high demands on the throughput rate (SMS per second). In addition, SMPP supports additional functions, including delivery reports, retrieval of messages (if they have not yet been delivered), encryption and read receipts.

Text2Speech

Text messages that are read out loud to the recipient on the phone: This form of communication allows numerous application scenarios to optimize certain processes. For example, entire announcement menus can be created using our associated Voice API. The answering machine or the annoying queues are thus replaced by an interactive system, which offers the customer an added value at the first contact.

On top of that, there are numerous markup languages available for the voice messages. Voices can be recorded and played back, conference calls can be initiated and much more.

Two-Way-Messaging

Two-way messaging is similar to the conventional version of exchanging messages from mobile devices between two mobile numbers. Just with all the additional features of the SMS Gateway.

For this purpose, our dedicated Inbound SMS System is used, with which a return channel can be integrated, via which the receiver of a message can answer the sender. For this, a separate phone number is created, which is displayed as the sender of the SMS. Answers or responses to these SMS are automatically assigned to the corresponding phone number and thus to the associated customer account. The seven customer can then see the answer in their journal or have it send to the registered email address. It’s also possible to answer to that message.

Virtual phone number

Virtual numbers are used by our Inbound SMS System. Responses or feedback that the recipient directs to the virtual sender number can be assigned to the corresponding customer account via the dedicated system.

The virtual number is a numeric or alphanumeric ID including country code. For example, with seven you get a phone number from the home country of your customers. Thanks to the direct connection by the network operators, the virtual number is particularly fail-safe.

Voice

Our Voice API (interface for Text2Speech) allows text messages to be read out loud to the recipient on the phone: this form of communication allows numerous application scenarios to optimize certain processes.
